MIXED Exec

Kalina Silverman is the co-founder and co-president of MIXED. She grew up in Santa Monica, California and calls herself “Jewanese”, pertaining to her half Chinese and half culturally Jewish background. She is a sophomore broadcast journalism major and business institutions minor at Northwestern and aspires to be an international correspondent/documentary filmmaker and social entrepreneur. Her travels have taken her throughout China, Cambodia, Israel, and Europe. She also served as a Medill ambassador at Northwestern's satellite school in Doha, Qatar over spring break and will be going to Hamburg, Germany this summer to conduct a Holocaust Oral History research project. In addition to MIXED, Kalina is  a member of Kappa Alpha Theta,  serves as a Center for Global Engagement Fellow, and most importantly loves to play IM Sports!! 

Tori Marquez is the Co-Founder and Co-President of MIXED. She identifies most strongly as “half Hispanic”, describing herself as of Peruvian, Mexican, and of European descent. She is a sophomore at Northwestern University majoring in Human Development and Psychological Services and minoring in Psychology and Spanish. She plans on getting a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and hopes to become a licensed counselor. After spending 19 years in the cold and windy Chicago city, Tori is ready to move to a warmer client post college, specifically hoping to settle in Los Angeles or Miami to keep up her Spanish skills. Besides being involved in MIXED and her academic studies, Tori is involved in her sorority’s Risk Committee (Kappa Kappa Gamma), she is a member of Campus Language Connection, and she works as a Circulation Aide at Northwestern’s Main Library. In her free time she likes to run, attend yoga classes, eat yummy food, and listen to good music with her awesome friends.

Theo Cunningham is so excited to be the Vice President of MIXED for summer and fall 2014. She is a junior from Chicago studying Psychology and African American Studies, and identifies as Greek and African American. In addition to MIXED, Theo is involved through the Wildcat Welcome Board of Directors, her sorority, and is a Norris Aquatic Center lifeguard.

Kathy Del Beccaro, is the Vice President of MIXED. She is Italian, Japanese, Irish, Native American, 100% mixed, 50% RTVF major, 50% Economics major, and 100% Philadelphian. She is also involved with the Club Tennis Team, Inspire Media Productions, and Kappa Alpha Theta. In the future, she hopes to make movies and continue staying cool by keeping it MIXED.

Austin Alexandre is the Treasurer for MIXED. He is having a hard time writing this bio because I cannot figure out how I identify myself since I do not feel close ties to any culture but politically I am mixed. I am a Social Policy major with corn. I hail from the realm of the mid-Hudson Valley, New York. I want everyone to have the opportunity to go hiking and spend some time on clifftops and lay down in open fields of wild grass to see the stars.

Kelsey Pukelis is the Secretary of MIXED. Her 'mix' is half Guatemalan, a quarter Italian and a quarter Lithuanian. As a freshman at Northwestern, she majors in the Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS) Program and Economics. Other than her involvement in MIXED, she plays violin for Northwestern's Philharmonia Symphony Orchestra, practices on the club gymnastics team, serves on her sorority's Academic Committee (Pi Beta Phi), and is looking forward to being a Peer Adviser for incoming freshmen next year. She also enjoys adventures and travelling, trying new foods, and listening to music. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in economic development.

Mande Younge is the Academic Events chair for MIXED from New Jersey. She is a sophomore and still undecided, but has declared an English minor and design certificate. She describes herself as bi-racial, black, white, mixed race, and “grey.” Mande is involved with the club track and field team at NU, is a designer for The Daily Northwestern, and enjoys costume designing for student films and theater productions.

Cassie Sham is the Academic Events chair of MIXED. She is a sophomore Biology and Psychology double major who is 30% premed but 100% mixed. She is half Chinese from her dad’s side and quarter Irish/quarter French from her mom’s side. She is involved with Dance Marathon on the Dancer Relations committee, publicity chair of Northwestern’s RHA, and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.

Caroline Olsen is excited to be one of the new marketing chairs of MIXED! She is Danish and Filipina and is a freshman in Medill, hoping to go into photojournalism or video documentaries. On campus she's also involved in Best Buddies and takes photos for The Daily. She loves trying new foods, going to new places, and meeting baby elephants!

Jennie is a freshman hailing from New York City with a double major in Art Theory & Practice and Psychology. She is a proud Leo, one of the Marketing Chairs for MIXED, a volunteer for Chicago HOPES, and a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Jennie loves crafting, yoga, buddhas, 90's boy bands, making smoothies, and all animals, especially her dog, Ziggy! Her life goals include traveling to exotic places, putting an end to animal cruelty, and surviving 3 more winters in Chiberia!

Killian Young is the marketing co-chair of MIXED. He is half-Taiwanese on his dad’s side and half-Irish on his mom’s side, and is also a first-generation American. Killian is a junior majoring in magazine journalism and minoring in sociological studies. Outside of MIXED, he is also a member of Delta Chi, a runner training for his second marathon, and a writer for Rolling Stone andConsequence of Sound.

Sara Hou is the Fundraising chair of MIXED. She is a sophomore from Maryland majoring in Economics with a minor in Creative Writing. She is half Chinese on her dad's side and a quarter-Swedish/quarter-Finnish on her mom's side. In addition to MIXED, she is also on Sponsorship committee for Relay For Life and enjoys playing violin, tennis, and knitting for charity.

Joona Hamad is the Social Chair for MIXED. He is an Industrial Engineering major and pursuing two of the many certificates that NU offers. Though he is half Sudanese and half Australian, he doesn’t associate himself with just black or white culture, but rather a MIX. Joona is also involved with Design for America, Institute of Industrial Engineers, and works at the University cente

Sarah Bridgewaters is the External Relations chair for MIXED. She is a junior majoring in Urban Studies and African American Studies. She defines herself as Afro-German (German mother, African American father). She is a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and is the current Student Advisory Board representative for the African American studies department. Previous campus positions held include FMO treasurer and ISRC president.

Nick Davis is the Administrative Chair for MIXED. He is a first-year Chemical Engineering Major with an African American Studies minor track. His mix is half black and half white (French, German, and Irish). He is a Posse Scholar from Los Angeles who is also on the Club Volleyball team. His job includes interaction with MSA, ASG, and mixed race student groups on other campuses.

Andy McIntosh is the mixed media specialist of MIXED. He is half-Japanese and half-Caucasian. Having been raised in the Midwest most of his life, he is learning more about his Japanese half by taking Japanese language courses. He is an undecided freshman but will likely pursue some discipline of engineering. In addition to MIXED, he is involved in Zen Society, and enjoys longboarding, slacklining, tea, and picking up random hobbies he drops a month later.

Patrick Lueg is the Webmaster for MIXED. He's a sophomore Econ major and Psych minor. Originally from Germany and having lived there, Nigeria, Ghana, Belize and Venezuela, he and his family have finally settled down in the suburbs of Chicago. He is half-German and half-Nigerian and still has his German citizenship. Besides MIXED, Pat is also the webmaster for Phi Alpha Delta, tutors, does some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai and enjoys longboarding, doing card tricks and playing Super Smash Bros.
